Various stations were set up in the Aloha Center displaying different preparedness utilities such as water storage and treatment, outside cooking equipment, food storage and generators.

Hannah Haupt, a freshman in exercise and sports science from Oregon, thinks it is important for students to be prepared and knowledgeable about emergency procedures on campus. Haupt explained, “In the case that something happens, students need to know what to do and they can act in a logical way that is safe for those around them and for themselves.”

The BYUH security webpage reads: “Students sometimes tend to forget they are on an island in the middle of the ocean, which means they are living with the risk of natural disasters every day. The chance of being hit by a deadly tsunami, a destructive hurricane, or a serious earthquake might seem small, but it is possible. Being prepared and knowing what to do in a disaster situation can be the difference between death and life, being a victim or a survivor.”

Preston Squire, a sophomore in psychology from Utah, understands the importance of preparing for a disaster before it happens. Squire has learned some survival techniques on his own, and shared, “What I’ve noticed from being in boy scouts and serving a mission in Madagascar, is that when people don’t prepare they tend to panic and then forget what to do, so it’s important to really pay attention to the details. Basics—you want to have shelter, food, clothing, and a first aid kit.”

The BYUH Emergency Preparedness Guide is a training program that helps students familiarize themselves with the school disaster plan, understand the risk of different disasters, and learn how to prepare themselves. It also provides necessary tips, advice, contacts, and documents that will be helpful in preparing your emergency kit.

Roy Yamamoto, BYUH Campus Director of Safety and Security, advises students to take the time to go online and read the materials available to students on the BYU-Hawaii website. Yamamoto explained that BYUH has put in place a hierarchical system of leadership and communication to help organize the student body and faculty in the case of any dangerous situations. If students take the time to do so, they will have no need to fear for their safety.

World Bank says it will probably get worse

Several decades ago, Keyes Beech, an American journalist based in Bangkok, famously had the legs of his grand piano stuck into two sets of Wellington boots, so that when the water rose inevitably in his house, the rubber footwear protected his piano.

The water could well be above Beech’s boots today. He would be alarmed at the flooding that has made high water in Bangkok no longer a joking matter. Nor is it a joke in a long list of Asian cities, even including Singapore, which may have the best infrastructure in the entire Asian region. Nonetheless, water has regularly risen hip-deep on Orchard Road, the island nation’s upscale shopping district.

    Local first responders will have an additional tool at their disposal now that Yuma County’s Office of Emergency Management has implemented a new database to identify residents who are handicapped or are unable to self-evacuate during an emergency.

    “As (emergency managers), we need to deal with society as a whole,” said Gretchen Robinson, Yuma County emergency management director. “And that includes everybody: the disenfranchised, people with impairment issues, and people who lack the means to evacuate.”

    The Emergency Evacuation Assistance Database is a result of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s new post-Katrina guidelines and is intended to provide a list of residents who may have special needs to first responders.

    “Let’s say there was a blackout, and somebody on the list stated they were on oxygen,” Robinson said. “If I knew this, I could then tell APS and first responders that we may need to pay extra attention to that (particular) area because there are people who live there that require special attention.”

    Area residents who would like to be included in the database can visit the county’s website and complete a 21-question form. The form can be submitted online or it can be printed out and returned to the Emergency Management Office.

    Information will be kept confidential and will only be used to identify individuals during an emergency.

    Robinson also stressed that despite the new database, the primary responsibility for a person’s safety during a disaster still rests with the individual.

    “This is not a guarantee that someone will come for them. People need to develop their own preparedness kits and develop a support system or network that they can contact during an emergency,” she said. “This is just another tool for first responders so that we know who may need some special help.”
